Right behind NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology, AMD showed off their new “FreeSync” at CES. To bring FreeSync to desktop monitors, AMD has applied for a DisplayPort 1.2a Specification Change Request,
“Benefits as a result of changes
This enables the ability for external DisplayPort to take advantage of the option to ignore MSA timing parameter and have the sink slave to source timing to realize per frame dynamic refresh rate.”
It’ll be interesting to see where each respective technology goes in the future. Will it be similar to HD-DVDs V. Blu-Rays? Or will it be similar to Eyefinity V. Surround? Eyefinity is generally more refined overall than Surround is so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Let the refresh rate battle begin!
